Sunshades - Butler Creek:

Just curious if anyone has tried the Butler Creek Sunshields, as opposed to the Tenebraex killFlash ARD? Or preferably both. I'd like the good/bad/ugly on em if you could. My rifle will be arriving soon, as will the scope and just seeing which set I should get.

I have one of the honeycomb sunshades like what I believe you are refering to, but I don't use it any more. For my purpose, I don't like it. As a law enforcement officer I may be ask to work in low or artificial light and I have found that there is what I would call a signifigent loss of light transmitted through the scope (brightness) and in addition image sharpness is also deminished (fuzziness is increased). It might even be described as hazy. Some folks have told me that they don't see any difference when they use one, but that is not my impression. Try this, take one to the range and have a friend slide it into and bac out of place after you are focased on a grid type target at 100 yds. (or so, I use 200 yds.) and see what you think. Hope this answers your question.

To lesser matters: a question to anyone who has the Tasco SS10x42 (eyepiece focus model) or a Butler Creek catalogue. I have tried without success to obtain the model codes for a set of Butler Creek flip open scope covers for this scope. The local distributor is less than helpful and Butler Creek has ignored my emails. I can work out the objective cover reqd, but the eyepiece cover code is a mystery (eyepiece diameter is approx 1.75"). Any assistance appreciated. By the by, this scope is sold by another company, Nikko Stirling, in Australia as their Sniper Scope. As far as I can tell, identical scope, made in Japan, lifetime warranty, but can be had for about $US220 on occasions, half the price of the Tasco!

Butler Creek says to pick the cover inside diameter that is closest to the scope outside diameter. A larger size will accommodate up to .025 interference. Slightly undersized (.010) covers will fit also. The EYE 18 is 1.700", EYE 19 is 1.730", and the EYE 20 is 1.775". The Butler Creek product codes are: 20180, 20190, and 20200.
