Anyway, I've been thinking about a gun safe for awhile now and want
some opinions. This is not to say I want to spend a grand on a safe. I
want a safe that will keep the average kid with a screwdriver out. Our
local Wal-Mart had a safe on sale (a metal cabinet) that I just chuckled
at. My dealer has a KenCraft 10 gun cabinet selling for $219. This appears
to be a solid safe box. Lag bolted to the floor and wall should prove to
be a sturdy item. Does anyone have any tips or opinions?

Bill in NY---I don't know what part of NY you are from but I'm originally from Buffalo (the really cold part of NY). There are a couple of gun safe makers that offer a minimal options stripped-down safe. They don't have the heavy fire rating but that is only a nomex type strip they glue around the door seam. You also won't get the fancy Emron finish. I think the company name is Yankee Safes but I could be way off. It has been a while since I've looked at safes. There is a store in the buffalo area (if you are near there) that sells them. Its called Johnson's Country Store. They might not carry that brand anymore. Prices were under $500 for a good safe.
