The .224 Valkyrie

The .224 Valkyrie was introduced at the 2018 SHOT Show by Federal Premium Ammunition. Developed as a long-range cartridge, the .224 Valkyrie had to be efficient and precise, and it had to be compatible with current modern sporting rifles. The .224 Valkyrie is based on the .30 Remington and 6.8 SPC and fires bullets with the same diameter as the .223/5.56 NATO.

The Valkyrie round has a special place amongst the multitube of AR-15 Cartridges that have come out over the years. Also, it’s probably the round you’re searching for if you want to get the most out of your AR-15’s range without having to switch to a bigger caliber or an AR-10. In fact, Remington claims it’s able to remain supersonic at over 1300 yards all while producing hardly any recoil allowing you to hit the target and take rapid follow-up shots at extreme distances.

Can I Use My 6.8 SPC Magazine?

Best .224 Valkyrie Magazines

The 6.8 SPC and the .224 Valkyrie are both based off of the .30 Remington Cartridge, so technically, you should be able to feed the .224 Valkyrie on a 6.8 SPC magazine. However, since the bullets for the 6.8 and the .224 are different sizes and dimensions, it’s going to have a different geometry which will affect the shape of the magazine.

As a general rule, it’s always a good idea to use a magazine specifically made for the caliber you’re loading onto your rifle. Chances are, you’re going to be buying new magazines to go along with your new rifle/ cartridge. So, if given the opportunity, try getting one mag for the .224 Valkyrie.

If you do insist on using 6.8 SPC magazines for the .224 Valkyrie, just remember that as a general rule the .224 Valkyrie is more likely to work well in a metal 6.8 SPC Magazine, or a mixture of polymer with metal feed lips.

Also, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to fit the full number of rounds intended to fit your magazine due to suboptimal magazine geometry. For example, a 10-round 6.8 SPC magazine might only fit 8 or 9 rounds, but a 10 round .224 Valkyrie magazine is guaranteed to stack the entire capacity.

How Many Magazines Is Too Many?

You can’t have too many magazines, but you may have too few.

Is ten too much? 15 or 20? There isn’t a set amount of magazines you should stop with since each individual uses their rifle in a different way.  It’s also a good idea to stock up on as many magazines as you feel comfortable owning for each caliber you intend to use, especially given the current state of gun and component shortages.

There’s no harm in stocking up on additional magazines, even if you only use two or three at a time. Even if you’re simply looking to spend an extended period of time at the range without having to pack and unpack your magazines, this is the way to go.

Buyer’s Guide for the Best .224 Valkyrie Magazines

Build Material

Almost all AR-15 magazines are built out of either steel or aluminum alloy bodies. Manufacturers often use 6061-T6 aluminum, a durable polymer, or a hybrid of both. However, most of the time, polymer seems to outdo steel and aluminum bodies outright. It’s a lightweight and versatile material that can withstand a lot of wear and tear for a fraction of the cost.

Build Quality

An ideal magazine comes with a high-quality metal spring and metal followers. This ensures that the rounds will feed reliably from the magazine into the firing chamber. Some of the more premium options will have a stainless steel spring with a polymer or aluminum anti-tilt follower. These are on the pricier end of the spectrum but you’re sure to come out with a magazine that’s durable and will work great for a long time.

Ease of Ejection

Although often overlooked, your magazine should eject smoothly out of your AR. The last thing you want in a shootout is having trouble replacing your magazine. A magazine that ejects properly should release itself immediately after triggering the mag-release button. It should also drop out of your AR without snagging or needing assistance.

Texturing

Although modern magazines are designed to withstand tough falls, dropping a magazine might misalign one of your cartridges. Or you might get large debris inside the magazine that can lead to feeding problems while shooting.

A good magazine will have a flared base, non-slip texture, or non-slip grooves on the body. These features make it easy to grab in any weather condition. If you tend to wear gloves when shooting, try finding a magazine with deeper grooves to give you more surface area to grab on when replacing your magazine.

Review your State Laws

Remember to abide by all applicable federal, state, and local laws. When in doubt, err on the side of caution. As you’re probably well aware, there are certain states, including Illinois, New York, and California, that have very tight gun laws and heavily regulate AR-style weapons.

Additionally, these gun restrictions can regulate magazine capacity for your AR-15. For example, in California since the year 2000, it’s been illegal to purchase or import large-capacity magazines. Unfortunately, California decided that anything over 10 rounds is a large capacity for an AR. So if you live in there or other states with similar gun restrictions, make sure to get a state-compliant .224 Valkyrie magazine.

E-lander Magazine 6.8 SPC

E-lander Magazine 6.8 SPC

The E-lander Magazine 6.8 SPC is a no-nonsense magazine designed and engineered to produce high-performance weapon solutions. Produced in Israel to equip the most elite soldiers of the IDF, these magazines are undoubtedly one of the best magazines on the market today.

Our Pick

The E-lander Magazine 6.8 SPC 10 Rounds Steel is an excellent choice if you need a robust magazine for your .224 Valkyrie Cartridges. The premium quality steel construction coupled with an extremely surface wear and corrosion-resistant coating makes this an unbeatable magazine option for a low price.

The magazine comes with its own cutting-edge proprietary follower that provides superior reliability even in the toughest of situations.  It even comes in a state legal magazine capacity of 10 rounds in case you live in any areas where magazine capacity is an issue.

How to Use the .224 Valkyrie Magazine With the AR-15

The .224 Valkyrie magazine will work on the same magazine well and lower receiver as the 5.56/similar rounds, assuming this is what you have installed. So to use the .224 Valkyrie with your AR-15, all you have to do is to swap out the barrel, bolt, and any muzzle device you might have on the upper receiver. If you want to make things easier, you can also buy a complete one.224 Valkyrie upper instead of separate components.

Technically, you could use 5.56 magazines with the .224 Valkyrie rounds, albeit you might be able to fit and fire around 4 rounds before you run into feeding issues. You can also try 6.8 SPC Magazines, which will most likely work better thanks to a more compatible magazine geometry. But for the best results, I would use magazines designed exclusively for the .224 Valkyrie since neither the 5.56 nor the 6.8 SPC magazine can replace the feeding consistency of a proper .224 Valkyrie magazine.

Wrapping Up

Any one of the best .224 Valkyrie magazines that we’ve covered here today will make a solid choice for your collection. If you do end up going a different route, you can always follow our buyer’s guide section that we went over earlier to help you find a .224 Valkyrie Magazine magazine that works better for you.

Keep in mind when choosing the best .224 Valkyrie magazines, you need to be aware of the exact type you’re buying. Although most 6.8 and even some 5.56 magazines might work with the .224 Valkyrie, it’s always better to find a magazine that’s configured specifically to the .224 Valkyrie round to prevent feeding issues later on. If you do insist on a 6.8 SPC Magazine, find one with steel feed lips or purchase one that has great reviews for the .224 Valkyrie to lessen the possibilities and any feeding issues from the product.
