Why would you need a scope for your Mosin Nagant rifle?

So why do you need a Mosin Nagant scope? If you’re still holding onto your vintage Mosin Nagant rifle, are you frequently using it on your hunting trips? Sure, we’re not talking about extreme capabilities here, but these rifles are great for taking down common game you’ll find outdoors.

For this, you’ll need a scope for your Mosin Nagant. Preferably a scout scope or a scope with a lot of eye relief. We’ve put together a list here in search of the best Mosin Negant scope. As ever, we’ll let you know what we think is the best choice for the average rifle owner. We realized that for a gun like this, you probably don’t want to invest in the most top of the line scope. As such, we picked a group of scopes that cover everything from low budgets to crystal clear optics, to simply enhancing the vintage appeal.

Whatever your preference is, you’ll have some good choices here.

CVLIFE Hunting Rifle Scope 6-24×50 AOE Red and Green Illuminated Gun Scope

Materials

The CVLife Scope Mosin Nagant Rifle Model has a body made of high grade machined aluminum alloy in a one inch tube, and it’s entirely sealed to be waterproof. It’s also filled with nitrogen, making it fog proof as well as shock proof. The 50mm objective lens is part of the Kellner eyepiece, which has incredible focus ability that can adjust for even near sighted or far sighted shooters to use without wearing glasses.

The magnification range is 6x to 24x. The multicoated lens allows for 90% light transmission, and there are both red and green illuminated reticle options for use under any daylight or low lighting conditions. The click value of the adjustment knobs is 1/8th of an inch at 100 yards.

Performance

The CVLife Scope for Mosin Nagant Rifles is surprisingly a good quality scope for such a low cost (we’ll get to that later). The magnification range is quite large, and multiple colored reticles are a big help for hunting in various lighting – even target practice.

Our one complaint is that since the Mosin Nagant gives a good kick of recoil, you may find yourself having to frequently rezero these optics, but the light transmission and picture of this sight can be hard to beat. This is the best scope for Mosin Nagant rifles if you have a low budget and don’t mind making a small compromise.

Sniper Country’s take

The CVLife Scope for Mosin Nagant Rifles is currently running for about $40 online, which is an insane deal, since it was originally selling for over $200. Don’t let that price drop freak you out; we found over 1,000 reviews of this option online, and it has almost entirely 4 and 5 star reviews.

Pros
  • Lowest cost
  • Focuses well enough for near and far sighted shooters
  • Red and green reticles
Cons
  • Will need adjustments after recoil

Vortex Optics Crossfire II Second Focal Plane, 1-inch Tube

Materials

The Vortex Optics Crossfire II Scout Scopes for Mosin Nagant are one inch tubes made of tough aircraft grade aluminum in a matte black finish. This scope is also fog, water, and shock proof. The 32mm objective lens is fully multicoated with anti reflective barriers for optimal light transmission.

Most impressive is the Dead Hold BDC Reticle which is a customized hashmark designed to eliminate guesswork with holdover and windage adjustments. The second focal plane reticle maintains the same ideal appearance and size through all magnifications. The magnifying power of this scope is 2x to 7x. Thankfully, this scout scope also leaves an impressive nine and a half inches of eye relief.

Performance

We love that the Vortex Optics Crossfire II Mosin Scope offers a totally different type of functioning than the previous option listed, giving out readers a variety of options. This scout scope is excellent for anyone who craves that long eye relief, especially for something like a Mosin Nagant with a lot of kick back.

The 2x to 7x magnification is a little less than what the experienced hunter may look for, but it’s the perfect range for tromping through the woods or working on your rifle target practice. The Dead Hold BDC Reticle is really nice, but we speculate that it holds its appearance so well because of the lower magnifying range. That being said, it really does work!

Sniper Country’s take

The Vortex Optics Crossfire II Mosin Scope sells for about $130 online, which is still in our lower price range here. It’s not as cheap as $40 but this is a solid scout scope that shouldn’t let you down while having a little hunting fun.

Pros
  • Budget friendly
  • Reticle holds appearance and needs little adjustment
  • 9.5 inches of eye relief
Cons
  • Magnification range limited for experienced hunter

Hi-Lux Long Eye Relief 2-7X32

Materials

The Hi–Lux Optics Long Eye Relief Scope for Mosin Nagant is made of a single tube, constructed of durable aluminum in a matte black finish. It has been designed specifically to be mounted forward of the receiver to allow anywhere between eight to thirteen inches of eye relief, depending on how you position it.

The magnification range of this long eye relief scope is 2x to 7x and it’s intended to be used on the 2x magnification to close in on wounded game. A quick snapping of the rifle up to the hunter’s shoulder should allow the scope to zero in on the appearing prey. The adjustment knobs provide a ¼ inch click value, and the entire scope is, of course, shock proof, water proof, and fog proof.

Performance

The Hi–Lux Long Eye Relief Scopes for Mosin Nagant are another great option for offering a lot of distance between yourself and the eyepiece. You can expect a lot of happy hunting with your Mosin Nagant, thanks to the special design in this scope to help you quickly lock in on your target while holding your rifle at the ready.

Again this is another option that isn’t going to offer a huge range of field or magnification. We would prefer seeing a 1/8 inch click value as opposed to a ¼ inch. Hunting deer or small game with this scope attached to your Mosin Nagant, however, should prove to be very enjoyable and easy.

Sniper Country’s take

The Hi–Lux Optics Long Eye Relief Scopes for Mosin Nagant Rifles cost about $140 to $160 online depending on where you purchase is from. If you don’t need much more than the basics in a long eye relief scope, then look no further than this baby.

Pros
  • 8 to 13 inches of eye relief
  • Will quickly focus on wounded prey at 2x magnification
  • S/W/F proof
Cons
  • Basic magnification range
  • ¼ inch click value

Bering Optics Mosin Nagant Scout Scope

Materials

The Bering Optics Mosin Nagant Scope is a one of a kind, unique piece to add to your vintage rifle that prides itself in small details and an appealing appearance. It comes on a solid steel base that attaches to your rifle by two pins and four screws, which are included with the scope.

It makes a great Mosin Nagant 91/30 scope and scout scope, and even comes with an aesthetic leather eye piece cover. The one inch main tube is a Russian styled body in aluminum housing. It has a fixed 3.5x magnification in a 20mm objective lens. It is totally weather resistant and fog and shock proof. All of the optics are multicoated for lovely light transmission, and there are finger operated turrets for windage and elevation adjustment.

Performance

We love the look and feel of the Bering Optics Mosin Nagant 91/30 Scope for its classic Russion look. If you’re intending to hang onto your Mosin Nagant, it’s likely because of its vintage appeal, and what better way to enhance it than with this style of scope? Due to the fixed magnification, this definitely isn’t for the serious hunter, but it’s absolutely for a hobbyist or anyone who enjoys holding a little history in their hands.

It’s a one of a kind optic intended for unique uses but we could see a lot of our fellow gunowners enjoying this purchase.

Sniper Country’s take

The Bering Optics Mosin Nagant Scope is the most expensive option within this review. They run for a little under $300 online. That’s quite a jump from the previous prices we were looking at but it’s a worthy investment for anyone who likes to enhance the classic looks of their old rifles. Splurge on yourself and give your Mosin Nagant a little eye candy!

Pros
  • Classic Russian style
  • Comes with screws and pins for steel base
  • Vintage appearance with leather optics cover
Cons
  • Most expensive option

Editor’s Choice Mosin Nagant scope

Our top Mosin Nagant Scope in this review is the Vortex Optics Crossfire II.

We know it doesn’t offer the highest magnification but is that really necessary for this type of rifle? We think a 2x – 7x range is pretty standard and effective. Plus, the Dead Hold BDC Reticle is a unique offering that will help eliminate a lot of guesswork while hunting. If we’re picking the best option for the average gunowner then we think a high quality scope with standard features is what most will be looking for. Additionally, that 9.5 inch eye relief will really come in handy on a firearm with such powerful recoil. We can definitely stand behind the Vortex Optics Crossfire II Scope.

  1. The Vortex Crossfire II 2-7×32 Scout scope does not have the Dead-hold bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticle. It has the standard Vortex V-Plex reticle, which is a duplex style reticle. I have one on my Winchester model 94, it works great.
